On archiving, performing and displaying the history of contemporary dance and performance
The aim of EDA is to detect and highlight the places, areas, and events where dance and interdisciplinary performance have been breaking through. Dance could not find its own institutional status until the communist regime started to decline in the 1980s, but it was constantly present and emerging in the so-called “fields of experiment” – visual arts, experimental music and theatre, performance art, etc. The EDA project affirms “interdisciplinarity”, or the crossing of boundaries between disciplines and strong social contextualization of artistic production. In this sense, the project brings together an audience from different fields and different perspectives.
East Dance Academy is a working space in which the participants display historical examples of performances and actions in their local context, and these displays might be possible examples of how to think about dance in a broader cultural perspective. The event will comprise reconstructed performances, screenings of dance and performances from the 1960s and 70s, demonstrations, live archiving, debates, and lectures. Part of the event will be dedicated to re-enacting historical events; this will include the live archiving of the occupation of the University of Ljubljana in 1971, presentation of Re:akt! platform by Janez Janša, and a performance of Slovene National Theatre by Janez Janša.
In addition to the event, the issue of Maska performing arts journal “History – experience – archive” is dedicated to the reflection on the concept of history and historiography and its use in the field of art practices.
With East Dance Academy, Maska introduces the platform ARTCHIVE – Contaminated with History, a one-year programme of research, events, performances, and publications on the history of contemporary art, performance, and society. The processes of historicization in contemporary performing arts will be presented through art projects, presentations of working methods, dramaturgical analyses, research, and workshops. The purpose of the platform is to place the discussion on contemporary performing arts into the broader context of art history in the second-half of the 20th century.
East Dance Academy is part of the international project What to Affirm What to Perform?, a cooperation between Allianz Kulturstiftung, Centre for Drama Art Zagreb, Centrul Nacional al Dansului Bucuresti Bucharest (The National Center of Dance Bucharest), Maska Ljubljana, and Tanzquartier Wien.
