Let me Take off the Masque of Maska (an invitation to our readers)

My aim is to set up Maska as a critical platform of the performing arts field and as a place of live encounter, confrontation and discussion of and about contemporary arts in the local and international contexts. Maska desires to uphold and foster theoretical discourse and reflection as well as to track interdisciplinary logics of contemporary performing arts and to establish its multilayered connections. Maska’s rebuilt concept is based on the strategy of communication and openness. The journal’s effort is to build lively and stimulating dialogue with artists and the arts scene, open to praxis –
the new, current, political and groundbreaking; open to reflection on the historical, yet still present, moment; and at the same time, its contents displaying indicators of contemporary society, art markets and culture. The journal will therefore not only be a document of responses to art practices but also actively participate in the wider and narrower contexts and their production, spread between artistic activity and cherishing the practice of thinking/writing on art. This field in between is the place of encounter that I wish to create on the pages of Maska. Along with the necessary articulation of our positions which through critical attention contribute to the opening of the field, its connections, relations and confluences.

Let me take you for a walk through the renovated concept which I will create together with the editorial and international boards. The pages of the journal are occupied/engaged with different rubrics. Perspectives puts light on the current events in the art scene, the state of affairs offers two specific views into the intestines of artistic creation and into the broader situation of cultural policies, scenorama deals with reflections on artistic creations, manifesto sketch-book is open for any kind of interventions in the domain of art practice. The central topic is focused in the rubric phenomenon which represents the reaction of the current circumstances in the field of contemporary art as well as constructive approaches into it. There are a few other rubrics in store that will enter into the journal in proportion as space and time allow.

I hope that you will indulge yourself with the proposed content of ideas and vibrations (along with a cup of good coffee and a crispy cookie).
