ARTISTIC AND SOCIAL ASSEMBLAGE OF BODIES: CONTEMPORARY PERFORMING ARTS AND THE POWERLESSNESS OF THE POLITICAL
Maska and Cankarjev dom

We invite you to enrol into the Reflection on Contemporary Art: Seminar of Contemporary Performing Arts. In the 2009/2010 school year, the seminar will take place under the heading Artistic and Social Assemblage of Bodies: Contemporary Performing Arts and the Powerlessness of the Political.
In its ninth consecutive year, the Seminar will again be composed of internal lectures, a series of public lectures and four theoretical and practical workshops. The enrolled students will be able to take part in the internal seminar and workshops, whereas public lectures are open to everyone.

We will also provide a rich accompanying programme, which will be prepared on the basis of current social happenings in art (attending performances, talks with artists, symposia and panels, the possibility of taking part in various fields of Maska’s operation, which will enable the students to learn about and actively cooperate in publishing, editing the journal and the book series, directing and dramaturgy, while, as external observers, they will be able to cooperate also in creating Maska’s working methodology).

An introduction to the Seminar of Contemporary Performing Arts will be free participation and active cooperation in the Šoking gala šov festival marking the 40th anniversary of the emergence of the Pupilja Ferkeverk Group. Between 21 and 28 October 2009, numerous events will take place at various venues in Ljubljana: the exhibition ‘Time for Revolution’; the publication of a monograph on the Pupilija Ferkeverk group; a performance of the reenacted Pupilija, papa Pupilo and the Pupilceks and The Noble Mould of Pupilija Frekeverk and an international festival of reconstructions, during which we will provide intensive instruction for all the Seminar participants.

The Seminar, which is organized by Maska and Cankarjev dom, will take place on Mondays in Cankarjev dom, whereas the workshops will take place at the end of the week and over the weekends. A detailed programme will be available on Maska’s web site (www.maska.si) from 1 September 2009.

The Seminar wants to present current reflections and art procedures in contemporary performing arts that connect the art practice of performing with broader social aspects of everyday life. It will focus on the connections between procedures in contemporary performing arts and social modes of performing. In the second half of the 20th century, body consumption became a field of resistance within contemporary performing arts where the processes of subjectivization took place, but, today, it is precisely this consumption that seems powerless. The main focus will be on those procedures in art that are related to the question of the assemblage of bodies in contemporary society. These are crucial for understanding the connections between artistic procedures and procedures in everyday life; at the same time, they establish a bridge between art practice and critical theory.
